Brothers appeals to mature crowd, sports lovers Monday, April 30, 2007

It might be hard to believe, but Serra Brothers Sports Pub has gotten bigger.

The one-room bar, adjacent to the Italian deli of the same name on Md. 26 in Eldersburg, was renovated less than a year ago, expanded - I use this word loosely - by at least a few more table widths.

Of course, the lack of elbow room makes for a cozy, intimate experience. It feels like a place where the regulars will know your name ... and possibly those of your brothers, sisters, uncles and mothers.

 I kid, I kid.

The renovations include clean lines and minimalistic decor that make the most of the given space. Both the deli and the bar sport a red and black color scheme with well-chosen highlights of wood and silver. The room is scattered with both TVs and electronic games, along with a ginormous jukebox in the back corner.

The shiny metal countertop at the bar is pretty nifty, too - according to the pub's Web site, it's the country's first cooling bar with technology called ChillDisc. Read: Instead of filling your drink with ice, you can just set it on the circles on the counter to get it chilled.

I'm not sure I believe it's the first cold bar in the country - it's up against progressive New York City and Los Angeles, mind you - but they were definitely the first with the ChillDisc technology. The company is based in Westminster and proactively, the owners of Serra Brothers Sports Pub ordered the discs on the spot when they saw the prototype sitting in creator Fred Kent's shop, Monster Metal Works.

A more mature crowd seems to patron the pub, although there were a few 20-somethings present (myself included). It has a more laid-back atmosphere than I'm used to finding at a sports bar, which is definitely refreshing.

In addition to a friendly ambience, professional staff and a focus on sports, the Serra Brothers Sports Pub hosts live entertainment, although they don't seem to be on a regular schedule just yet.
