Women's Resources plans events
Women's Resources has many exciting events planned for April, including its annual geranium sale, which raises funds for the services the organization offers to the community.
"Our crisis services are free to everyone, however we have to raise a great deal of money each year to stay in operation," said Development Specialist Joanne Kingkiner. "The geranium sale is one of the biggest fundraisers we hold each year."
Geraniums are $4 per plant, and they arrive on May 11, just in time for Mother's Day. The deadline to order geraniums is April 27. This sale coincides with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is recognized on both national and local levels.
The hallmark event of this month is the Take Back the Night march and rally today. There is a women's and children's march which begins at the Monroe County Courthouse at 6 p.m. The event culminates in a community-wide rally on the steps of ESU's Stroud Hall at 6:30 p.m.
Contact the Women's Resources business office at 570 424-2093.
Prime Time hostsannual health fair
Prime Time Health's seventh annual health fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the Quality Inn, West Main Street, Stroudsburg, across from Perkins.
Every year this fair focuses on medication management and other health issues for the older adult. There will be free health screenings, health services information, refreshments and door prizes. Admission is free.
This event is sponsored by Prime Time Health, Monroe County Area Agency on Aging, CVS Pharmacies, and the Quality Inn in Stroudsburg.
The Pennsylvania Food Employee Certification Act states that food establishments regulated by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture or a local health agency must employ at least one supervisor or other employee who has successfully completed a certified food safety training course. The National Restaurant Association will certify participants who complete the ServSafe course and pass their examination. Persons who pass the exam may then apply for the required PDA certificate.
Penn State Cooperative Extension is offering a combination home study/classroom format for certification. Each student pursuing certification must complete eight hours of home study prior to the first day of class and complete the assignments. Participants may register for Monroe or Pike County but must attend both classes in that county to be eligible for the examination. The ServSafe examination is given at the end of the second session in each county. Two opportunities will be offered in June:
Wednesday, June 6, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday, June 8, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Monroe County Extension office, 724 Phillips St., Suite 201, Stroudsburg PA. The registration deadline is May 23. Monday, June 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday, June 25, 9 aa.m. to 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 308 Broad Street, Milford. The registration deadline is June 4.
Those needing recertification must currently possess a food employee certification certificate from the PDA that is nearing expiration. You will not be required to complete the home study, but class attendance is required. You must bring your original food employee certification from the PDA to the first class. The NRA examination is optional for recertification.
The cost is $165 and includes the text, home study and class materials, the examination and lunch on the second day of class. For information or a registration form call 570 421-6430 for the Monroe County classes or 570 297-3400 for the Pike County classes. You may also print out a registration form at:
