The Christmas shopping rush turns into a New Year's fitness buzz for area health clubs. January brings waves of new members, according to managers of area clubs and programs. For people who resolve to improve their fitness in 2007, club personnel stress consistency, pacing, patience and having fun. Lightening the body load carries the most weight among individuals' reasons to join a club or fitness program. James Stewart, fitness attendant at LifeQuest Fitness of Conway, says about 100 new members join every January. "They come in and want to lose the stomach," he said. "The main thing is being consistent with a program." Explaining the club's spread of exercise equipment instead of extras, Stewart downplayed the popular notion that "new and improved" provides an easier ticket to trimming one's fat.
