Jon Beason's ability can't be measured in his 6-foot frame.

A compactly-built linebacker from the University of Miami, Beason is considered a quick study and a natural leader who could step in and start as a rookie.

He is among the linebackers the Bengals might take at No. 18, along with Florida State's Lawrence Timmons and Mississippi's Patrick Willis.

Beason visited the Bengals a couple of weeks ago and chatted with Miami native Rashad Jeanty, a Bengals outside linebacker.

Beason, who weighs 237 pounds, made up for a mediocre showing at the combine with an explosive pro day workout in Miami.

A former fullback who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury as a freshman, Beason moved to linebacker the next season. He started full-time the past two seasons in the middle and strong-side linebacker.

Having once played offense at 209 pounds, Beason has heard he could be moved to strong safety by some NFL teams, but most would want him to play outside on the weak side away from the tight end.

"I think I can handle (the middle)," he said. "I'm a smart guy; I think I pick on schemes pretty well. My preference is (weak side), just because I've been doing it. To me, they're pretty much interchangeable, but (weak side) allows me to run and make plays, to chase the football. To me, it really doesn't matter."

Beason has what scouts call an excellent football temperament and he possesses two attributes that Bengals coach Marvin Lewis values greatly - knee bend and hip explosion. Beason also is a demon on special teams and moves well in the open field.

The questions surround his durability; Beason had shoulder and knee injuries at Miami. He is considered better against the run than in pass coverage. And his lack of height keeps coming into play when NFL teams consider him.

"You look at Zach Thomas, London Fletcher, (and) those guys are 5-9," Beason said. "If there was one thing I could change, it would be my height, because supposedly they think that has something to do with playing linebacker, if I had another inch.

"To me, it doesn't matter how big you are, it's all about getting your job done. If you can get the job done, you should be the first guy chosen."

He might be the 18th guy chosen Saturday.
